I've been wanting to make Dorene a quilt for some time.
She groomed Julep & Derby until moving to Gettysburg, PA.
When Dorene was married her husband took a job in Alaska
{I can't remember what he did}. It was a pretty rough life living
there. She would share interesting stories about her life
at that time and what they needed to do to survive. Living in
Alaska wasn't for the faint of heart.
One story she shared was how she started making snow boots
for the dogs. She spend hours and hours cutting out
the boots, then sewing them together.
These dog boots became in very high demand.
When I saw the Alaska panel on-line I knew this would be a
perfect surprise quilt for her.
Derby has a pretty cushy life compared to the dogs of Alaska.
With his heart condition he would have never made it.
Derby has a slow heart beat and we're not sure how
long he will be with us. He's on heart meds which do
some good but they don't cure the problem.
The back fabric for the quilt below.
This is a favorite quilt of mine but instead of keeping it
{since I can't keep them all} it was gifted to a FB friend
who fell in love with it.
. . .
On another note my sister wants to go fabric shopping in
Lancaster on Monday since it's her birthday.
Who am I not to want to spend time with her to
celebrate her special day. On this trip I'll be looking
for bargain fabric to use as quilt backs {if there is such
a thing as 'bargain' anymore}. My stash is running low due
to completing a lot of quilts for Outreach.
Derby your heart holds so much love it is hard for it to work.
ReplyDeleteThe Alaska panel reminds me of a woman who lives near me. She has huskies and at one time I believe she actually raced them in the Iditarod.
ReplyDeleteDerby is so sweet! Give him a hug from me!
