Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, Buxton

On the road to see the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
Did you know ...
The height of the tower from ground level to top of lantern room is 198 feet.
Did you know ...
It was completed in 1870
The 1870 Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is located in the heart of the Graveyard of the Atlantic.  The first tower, built in 1803, was the country's first warning light, not a welcoming harbor light.  It warned mariners about Diamond Shoals that caused many shipwrecks.  It's black and white spiral pattern was first painted in 1873.  The lighthouse was relocated 2,900 feet to the southwest during summer 1999 to rescue it from erosion.
It was a long day of driving, stopping and walking around.  The westies loved all the new smells, but by the time we came home it was necessary to give them both a bath ... ? Why ? ...because they walked, then rubbed up against something that made their white fur - let's say - charcoal color!
