The Pink Moon

FULL PINK MOON ... April 29 ... 7:30 p.m.
Venus and Jupiter two of the brightest objects in the night sky,
can be seen on opposite sides of the horizon.

Venus, the brightest object in the sky after the sun and moon,
will glow near the western horizon for about an hour
after the sun sets and as the moon rises.

From about 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Venus and Jupiter,
the third-brightest planet, will appear on opposite sides of the sky.

Jupiter rises in the east shortly after the moon, within the constellation Libra.
It will be easy to find, near the moon, Monday and Tuesday nights, too.

The timing of the full moon’s appearance depends on where the
moon is in orbit around the Earth - this is why the actual time of the
full moon can be in daylight for certain locations.

Those on the East Coast of the United States will have the chance
to see a nearly full moon at around 7.30pm, according to Space.com.

The moon will look full as it rises, but the actual moment
it becomes full arrives at 8:58 p.m.

The moon and sun will even share the sky for a short
period of time in New York, due to the sun setting
twenty minutes after the moon rises.

April’s Full Moon, the Full Pink Moon, heralds the appearance of the
“moss pink,” or wild ground phlox—one of the first spring flowers.

It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon,
the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon.

These names were not invented by The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
They were used by early Colonial Americans—
who learned the names from the local Native Americans;
time was not recorded by using the months of the
Julian or Gregorian calendar. Many tribes kept track
of time by observing the seasons and lunar months,
although there was much variability. The name itself usually
described some activity that occurred during that time in their location.

My next post will be from the Outer Banks of North Carolina -
Duck to be exact.  When we asked Julep what she wanted
for her 10th birthday she said she wanted to play in the
ocean waves and walk on a sandy beach ... so Duck
here we come!  We have rented a house on the Sound
and will be looking out for that pink moon.

  1. Interesting post, My Friend. Enjoy your trip! PS We moved Shelley home for the summer this week. I laundered all her bedding and ironed it, including her Parisian pillow cases you made for her. She still loves them!
